The Baltic 21 Bioenergy Promotion project

The description and goal of the project

The Baltic Sea Region Bioenergy Promotion Project is a three year project (January 2009 – December 2011) aiming to promote and increase the sustainable use of bioenergy in the Baltic Sea Region. It will contribute to a common understanding of the opportunities and challenges in bioenergy throughout the diverse territory of the Baltic Sea Region. This is a Baltic 21 Lighthouse project. Bioenergy Promotion was approved as a strategic project in the Baltic Sea Region Programme. It will reinforce sustainable agriculture and forestry and improve the functioning of the energy market. The project will foster conditions that will support the Baltic Sea Region in reaching the 20% target for renewable energies by 2020.

National and regional authorities, universities, environmental and forestry development centers, agencies for renewable resources from Belarus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland and Sweden

Lead partner:

Finnish partners: Motiva Oy, University of Joensuu, and the Forest Development Centre of Finland (Tapio)

Roles of the Finnish partners:
Motiva Oy is the leader in the Work Package 2: Communication and Information

Tapio specializes in bioenergy policy (criteria & indicators, certification) under Work Package 3

University of Joensuu is participating in Work Package 3 – Policy; Work Package 4 - (Sub) Region and Work Package 2 – Communication and Information. The main role of the University of Joensuu will be in this project is to strengthen the already existing network among the regional bioenergy stakeholders in North Karelia. North Karelia is a leading bioenergy region in Europe and the Bioenergy Promotion project will serve an additional effort to promote the regional bioenergy promotional activities in terms of certification and further regional level planning.
